matching swimsuits

These photos are from a few weeks ago when we traveled to the northern California coast. I'm convinced everyone out there had to be from a colder state, because it wasn't exactly balmy, yet the beach was full of kids in swimsuits. We had driven past the coast and both of the girls really wanted to run into the ocean, so we made a quick detour to our AirBnB to grab their swimsuits.

This was probably one of the highlights for them even though we were only out there for an hour. It's funny how the quick little detours can sometimes be the most fun.

Also, how cute are their matching swimsuits? They are from Hannah Anderson. I am definitely going to have to get three pairs of matching swimsuits after baby girl shows up!

massive trees and banana slugs

As I'm writing this, the snow is falling outside and the temperature has dropped down into the 20s. It seems so long ago that we were wandering around in the sunshine on the beach or the cool shade of massive trees. It's funny how when you come back from vacation you sometimes wonder if you ever really went on that trip. I guess that's why we take pictures to prove it!

It's been a couple weeks since we were exploring the northern California coast and driving among these massive trees. I would highly recommend northern California for a low key, relaxing family vacation. Our favorite part was going on daily hikes to check out these giants. It's about as different as Colorado forests as possible.

Banana slug!!

A little note about the picture below. You might notice that both girls are happily sucking on suckers. We call this Sucker Power. About halfway through this hike, in which we still had to go down half the mountain, they both started crying and whining. Whelp, that's why I pack some suckers in the bottom of my bag to give them a little extra motivation and energy to finish the hike. In all honesty, this pregnant lady could have used some sucker power, but we all made it down in one, happy piece.

Have a great weekend!

a travel video: Southern California

Today I wanted to share our travel video from our trip to San Diego and Southern California.

I must say, posting this on the first day of the work week makes me really not want to be at work. Oh well, hope you all have a good Monday!

our mid-winter vacation to San Diego

Last week we spent some time in sunny San Diego, California. As you will see we didn't really see much of the sun while we were there (good for southern California, not so good for our vacation). We did manage to get to do a lot of fun things, some indoors, while we were there. We also packed all of our rain gear, so we were ready for whatever kind of precipitation we had to deal with. In fact, I think we were more prepared than 90% of the people we saw. Most everyone else was still walking around in flip flops and sweatshirts in the pouring rain. Rain is an oddity for San Diego.

But I digress, here are a few photos and tidbits from our trip.

First stop, Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

This was our first day in San Diego and while it was nice to get out and explore, it was also Inauguration Day. Which, in all honesty, I would have liked to watch some of that momentous day on live television. However, one of the blessings of the modern age is that we were able to go back to the hotel and find it all online. I got to stare at baby seahorses while the rest of the country either celebrated or cried. Baby seahorses are much more calming. :)

The next day we met my brother at the San Diego Zoo and dodged some more rain clouds.

Haha, I love this picture.

The next few days we spent exploring Balboa Park, checked out the Fleet Science Center (more on that tomorrow), and took a detour to Point Loma. There are loads of things to do in and around San Diego, so it wasn't hard to find good activities for us and the kids.

Chris had a lot of fun jumping around on the rocks.

On our last day in California, we had planned on going to Legoland, which was right near our hotel and a great activity for a (finally) sunny day. As it turns out, and only as we discovered the morning of, Legoland is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the winter. Bummer.

After a quick change of plans, we decided to drive north and go to Disneyland instead! Not a bad switch, right?

"Mom, what is that giant duck doing hugging my sister?"

My favorite ride was closed! It's A Small World was closed for repair...

p.s. It may look like Elinor hates us and/or Disneyland, but she really did have a good time. I like to think that she 'suffers no fools'.

I'm just finishing up our video, which is my favorite part of coming home from a trip. I should have it ready later this week!
